You Promised

The hand gently took her arm, stopping her in her tracks. She turned to look up at the man she loved and the smile disappeared from her face. He looked so serious and grim, a sudden change from the smiling and laughing he showed just moments ago.

"What's wrong?" she asked, a hand coming up to stroke his cheek. "You look so sad."

"There's something I have to tell you," he paused and took a deep breath, "The doctors said I might die in three years. It's a small chance but...I wanted you to know."

Concern filled her and she stared at him for a moment. There was nothing she could say or do that could make that go away. No, she couldn't just forget that. But, he had said it was a small chance. There was no reason to keep thinking the worst could come when there was a chance it would never show its face.

"Just...promise you won't, okay?"

She looked up at him, worry in her eyes as she searched his. There was no way that the greatest thing in the world to her was about to be taken away. He was there whenever she needed him. She was there whenever he needed her. He made her feel safe and he loved her. She needed him.

A small grim smile appeared on his face. He reached down and pressed his lips against her forehead before pulling away.

"I promise."

The constant beep from the machine that mirrored his heart beat echoed throughout the empty room. His eyes were closed as each shallow breath escaped his lips. He had become unresponsive a couple hours ago. The nurses came in every half hour to make sure he was still breathing. The doctors had stopped coming. The last one had told her that there was nothing they could do and that they were sorry.

She held his large hand in hers. A finger began to trace the lines in his palm. This hand, she realized, would never squeeze hers again. The arm that the hand was connected to would never hold her again. The lips would never press against hers and those beautiful eyes would never open to see her again. Tears began to breakaway from her eyes, sprinting down her cheeks as she came to the realization that soon he would be gone.

"You promised." she whispered, her voice quivering. "You promised you wouldn't die. What are you doing? You're dying."

She wanted to shout, she wanted to scream. She wanted him to open his eyes and smile at her, to tell her that it was all just a joke. A sick and horrible joke. She wouldn't even be mad at him, she just wanted to see those eyes open again.

"You promised."

She brought his hand up against her cheek as more tears came. He wasn't even dead yet, but she knew he was about to be soon.

"I love you, don't you forget that wherever you're going."

The beeps began to slow.

"I love you."

The beeps grew further apart.

"I'll miss you."

The beeps slowed to a stop. The man she knew and loved would never be there again for her. He was gone. He only broke one promise and it wasn't his fault. She just wanted him to live. Whatever way she could keep him alive. He was dead now.

She climbed onto the bed and laid next to his paling body. She brought her head down and pressed her lips against his.

"Good bye."

Hello hello!
